Jane Marcet: Conversations on Chemistry (Illustrated Edition) (Dodo Press)

Conversations on Chemistry (Illustrated Edition) (Dodo Press)

Description

Jane Marcet nee Haldimand (1769-1858) was a writer of introductory science books. In 1799 she married Alexander Marcet, a Swiss exile and physician, she settled in London where, through her husband, she had contact with many leading scientists. After helping to proof-read one of her husband's books, she decided to write her own, and produced expository books on chemistry, botany, religion and economics under the general title Conversations. The first of these was eventually published as Conversations on Natural Philosophy in 1819. Her Conversations on Chemistry was published anonymously in 1805, and became her most popular and famous work. Summarising and popularising the work of Humphrey Davy, whose lectures she attended, it was one of the first elementary science textbooks, going through sixteen editions in England and was an early inspiration to a young Michael Faraday. She also popularised the classical economics of Adam Smith and, particularly, David Ricardo. Her other works include: Conversations on Political Economy (1816), Conversations on Vegetable Physiology (1829), Essays (1831), Conversations on Government (1836), Conversations on the History of England (1842) and Conversations on Language (1844).

Damien Lewis: Apache Dawn

Apache Dawn

Description

The Apache attack helicopter is the British Army's most awesome weapons system. Deployed for the first time in Afghanistan, it has already passed into legend. The only thing more incredible than the Apache itself are the pilots that fly her. For the first time, Apache Dawn tells their story - and their baptism of fire in the unforgiving battle of Helmand province. Their call-sign was 'Ugly' - and there was no better word for the gruelling 100-day deployment they endured. Day after day, four of the Army Air Corps' finest pilots flew right into the heart of the battle, testing their aircraft to the very limit. Apache Dawn takes the reader with them on a series of unrelenting and brutally intense combat missions, from daring, edge-of-the-seat rescues to dramatic close-air support in the white heat of battle. Bestselling author Damien Lewis has been given unprecedented access to these heroic aircrews and to the men on the ground whose lives they saved. It is an astounding story of bravery, skill and resilience in the face of unbelievable odds. And it is the story of the Apache itself - the ultimate fighting machine.

The Heart of the World: A Journey to Tibet's Lost Paradise

Description

The myth of Shangri-la originates in Tibetan Buddhist beliefs in "beyul," or hidden lands, sacred sanctuaries that reveal themselves to devout pilgrims and in times of crisis. The more remote and inaccessible the "beyul," the vaster its reputed qualities. Ancient Tibetan prophecies declare that the greatest of all hidden lands lies at the heart of the forbidding Tsangpo Gorge, deep in the Himalayas and veiled by a colossal waterfall. Nineteenth-century accounts of this fabled waterfall inspired a series of ill-fated European expeditions that ended prematurely in 1925 when the intrepid British plant collector Frank Kingdon-Ward penetrated all but a five-mile section of the Tsangpo s innermost gorge and declared that the falls were no more than a religious myth and a romance of geography. The heart of the Tsangpo Gorge remained a blank spot on the map of world exploration until world-class climber and Buddhist scholar Ian Baker delved into the legends. Whatever cryptic Tibetan scrolls or past explorers had said about the Tsangpo s innermost gorge, Baker determined, could be verified only by exploring the uncharted five-mile gap. After several years of encountering sheer cliffs, maelstroms of impassable white water, and dense leech-infested jungles, on the last of a series of extraordinary expeditions, Baker and his National Geographic sponsored team reached the depths of the Tsangpo Gorge. They made news worldwide by finding there a 108-foot-high waterfall, the legendary grail of Western explorers and Tibetan seekers alike. "The Heart of the World" is one of the most captivating stories of exploration and discovery in recent memory an extraordinary journey to one of the wildest and most inaccessible places on earth and a pilgrimage to the heart of the Tibetan Buddhist faith."

Straight Talk with Your Kids About Sex: How You Can Get Them to Listen

Violet the Pilot download ebook

Steve Breen: Violet the Pilot

Violet the Pilot

Description

By the time she's two years old, Violet Van Winkle can fi x nearly any appliance in the house. And by eight she's building elaborate fl ying machines from scratch?mind-boggling contraptions such as the Tubbubbler, the Bicycopter, and the Wing-a-ma-jig. The kids at school tease her, but they have no idea what she's capable of. Maybe she could earn their respect by winning the blue ribbon in the upcoming Air Show. Or maybe something even better will happen?something involving her bestever invention, a Boy Scout troop in peril, and even the mayor himself! A classic underdog story full of humor and sweetness and retro pizzazz, "Violet the Pilot" is both endearing and adorable. It?ll fl y right into your heart.

Excellent . . . Flavia retains her droll wit. . . . The solution to a murder is typically neat, and the conclusion sets up future books nicely. "Publishers Weekly "(starred review) Honest, provocative, and vividly written, The Last Living Slut is the memoir of Roxana Shirazi, a woman raised traditionally in Tehran and led far astray by the sound--and the sex appeal--of rock and roll. A rare, raw account of a unique woman caught between her sexual appetites, her passion for music (and musicians), and the pressures of her Muslim family and upbringing, The Last Living Slut is Roxana's true story of her mission to push the world's most notorious heavy metal stars beyond their sexual comfort zone. In Pharaoh's Army is Tobias Wolff's unflinching account of his tour in Vietnam, his tangled journey there and back. Using his old wiles and talents, he passes through boot camp, trains as a paratrooper, volunteers for the Special Forces, studies Vietnamese, and - without really believing it himself - becomes an officer in the U.S. Army. Then, inexorably, he Violet the Pilot download PDF finds himself drawn into the war, sent to the Mekong Delta as adviser to a Vietnamese battalion. More or less innocent, self-deluded but rapidly growing less so, he dedicates himself not to victory but to survival. For despite his impressive credentials, he recognizes in himself laughably little aptitude for the military life and no taste at all for the war. He ricochets between boredom and terror and grief for lost friends; then and in the years to come, he reckons the cost of staying alive. A superb memoir of war, In Pharaoh's Army is an intimate recounting of the central event of our recent past. Once again Tobias Wolff has combined the art of the best fiction and the immediacy of personal history - with authority, humanity, and sure conviction.

Ajahn Sumedho,Diana St Ruth: Don't Take Your Life Personally

Don't Take Your Life Personally

Description

Ajahn Sumedho urges us to trust in awareness and find out for ourselves what it is to experience genuine liberation from mental anguish and suffering, just as the Buddha himself did two and a half thousand years ago. Buddhism is not about becoming the model of humanity or escaping the natural consequences of our past deeds, but of putting aside all pretence and all ideas in order to simply be where we are. The author therefore encourages us not to take our lives personally, but to look at the reality of this moment free from beliefs, views and opinions. He refers frequently to his own experiences, his own journey along the path, and this he does humorously, guilelessly and sometimes with brutal honesty. Ajahn Sumedho, an American Buddhist monk, practised for ten years in Thailand with the well known monk, Ajahn Chah. He has since spent over thirty years in England and is the founder of the Cittaviveka Forest Monastery in West Sussex and the Amaravati Buddhist Monastery in Hertfordshire. His many books include The Mind and the Way, Teachings of a Buddhist Monk, and The Sound of Silence.

Bryan Stevenson: Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption

Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption

Description

"New York Times "Bestseller - Named one of the Best Books of the Year by "The New York Times The Washington Post The Boston Globe The Seattle Times Esquire Time" Winner of the Carnegie Medal for Nonfiction -Winner of the NAACP Image Award for Nonfiction - Winner of a Books for a Better Life Award - Finalist for the Los Angeles Book Prize - Finalist for the "Kirkus Reviews "Prize - An American Library Association Notable Book A powerful true story about the potential for mercy to redeem us, and a clarion call to fix our broken system of justice from one of the most brilliant and influential lawyers of our time Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever. "Just Mercy "is at once an unforgettable account of an idealistic, gifted young lawyer s coming of age, a moving window into the lives of those he has defended, and an inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice. Praise for "Just Mercy" Every bit as moving as "To Kill a Mockingbird, "and in some ways more so . . . a searing indictment of American criminal justice and a stirring testament to the salvation that fighting for the vulnerable sometimes yields. David Cole, "The New York Review of Books" "" Searing, moving . . . Bryan Stevenson may, indeed, be America s Mandela. Nicholas Kristof, "The New York Times" "" You don t have to read too long to start cheering for this man. . . . The message of this book . . . is that evil can be overcome, a difference can be made. "Just Mercy" will make you upset and it will make you hopeful. Ted Conover, "The New York Times Book Review " "" Inspiring . . . a work of style, substance and clarity . . . Stevenson is not only a great lawyer, he s also a gifted writer and storyteller. "The Washington Post" As deeply moving, poignant and powerful a book as has been, and maybe ever can be, written about the death penalty. " The Financial Times" Brilliant. " The Philadelphia Inquirer" "" Not since Atticus Finch has a fearless and committed lawyer made such a difference in the American South. Though larger than life, Atticus exists only in fiction. Bryan Stevenson, however, is very much alive and doing God s work fighting for the poor, the oppressed, the voiceless, the vulnerable, the outcast, and those with no hope. "Just Mercy" is his inspiring and powerful story. John Grisham Bryan Stevenson is one of my personal heroes, perhaps the most inspiring and influential crusader for justice alive today, and "Just Mercy" is extraordinary. The stories told within these pages hold the potential to transform what we think we mean when we talk about justice. Michelle Alexander, author of "The New Jim Crow""
